Machnamh Counselling & Psychotherapy

"Out of your vulnerabilities will come your strength." - Sigmund Freud

About Me

My name is Alison Kirby. I am a pre-accredited Psychotherapist and Counsellor and General Nurse Practitioner working in the Limerick/Nenagh area. I offer a safe and confidential supportive space where you can explore thoughts, beliefs, feelings and behaviours. My goal is to help you understand yourself better and to support healing. In turn, allowing you to live more fully in the moment and to begin to develop new ways of being in the world that feel safe and connected.

My Therapy Approach

  • What does Machnamh mean ?
The term “Machnamh” is an ancient Irish concept encompassing reflection, contemplation, meditation and thought.
  • What is counselling psychotherapy?
Counselling psychotherapy provides a safe, therapeutic space where areas of your life that are problematic can be explored. This may include thoughts, beliefs, feelings or behaviours.  Working together in the sessions brings greater awareness and understanding that can help to facilitate positive change.
  • What happens in my first session?
The first counselling session allows us to get a sense of each other to see if we will be a good "fit" to work together. Together we identify what has brought you to therapy and areas you are being negatively affected by. Based on your current and past experiences, we set goals for what you would like to achieve from the therapy sessions and plan for future sessions.
  • Are our sessions confidential?
Your session is confidential. However, I reserve the right to consult with third-parties if, in my professional opinion, I believe you are at risk either to yourself, others or are at risk from someone else. Relevant third-parties may include: your next of kin, GP or other professionals. This will be done in consultation with you.
  • How many sessions will I need?
This is individual to each client and depends on what you would like to achieve from therapy as well as the supports that are available to you.
  • How regularly will I need to attend?
Although specific to each client's situation and your identified goals, attending for regular weekly sessions allows you to work through issues and to make the changes necessary to live to the best of your ability in a gradual and steady way.
